Wilkes Community College

Wilkes Community College

Wilkes Community College currently has a 151.7-acre (0.614 km2) campus and 14 buildings. The student enrollment is typically around 3,500 students for curriculum, 900 for continuing education, and 1,600 for basic skills. The college also has satellite campuses in nearby Ashe and Alleghany counties. WCC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Like most of North Carolina’s community colleges, WCC has an “open-door” admissions policy, which means that any adult with a high-school diploma can be admitted. The college pledges itself to “quality education, training and retraining for the workforce, including basic skills education, occupational, technical and pre-baccalaureate programs.” In addition to offering associate’s degrees in the technical, business and medical fields, the college also offers a university-parallel college transfer program, which provides the first two years of courses towards a bachelor’s degree. Students who complete this program can transfer to a four-year college or university.

In 1988 legendary, Grammy-winning guitarist Doc Watson, WCC horticulture instructor B Townes, and local businessman and musician Bill Young started the MerleFest music festival on the campus of Wilkes Community College. Named in honor of Doc’s late son Merle Watson, MerleFest has grown into one of the largest bluegrass and folk music festivals in the United States, drawing nearly 80,000 music fans each year. The festival has become the primary fundraiser for Wilkes Community College, and has brought national publicity to the college.

Stone Mountain is not immediately visible upon entering the park that bears its name, but this magnificent 600-foot granite dome is well worth the wait. Sunlight and shadows dance across a broad tapestry of stone. White-tailed deer emerge from the security of the forest to graze on meadow grasses at the mountain’s base. The scenery is only one attraction of the park.

Test your fly-fishing techniques in more than 20 miles of designated trout waters. Or, with more than 16 miles of trails, take a hike in the park. Designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1975, Stone Mountain is bounded on the north by the Blue Ridge Parkway and on the west by the Thurmond Chatham Game Lands. More than 14,100 acres of mountain beauty offer opportunities for outdoor activities of all kinds.

Nation’s Inn is located about an hour from Stone Mountain State Park through the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway.

The New River was named a National Wild and Scenic River in 1976 and it wildly winds through some of the best North Carolina mountain scenery. New River State Park is base camp for exploration of this river at two principal spots—Wagoner Road Access and US 221 Access. Both offer walk-in camping a few hundred feet from parking areas and both offer paddling access. Primitive, canoe-in camping is available at downstream access areas. Brief trips or multi-day excursions can be arranged with private outfitters or careful planning if visitors bring kayaks or canoes. It’s easy to combine paddling, camping, fishing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. A visitor center with exhibit hall complements interpretive programs on the river’s history and ecology, and a community building can be rented for family or group gatherings.
