2019 Opening Day: April 1st
ZALOO’S Canoes is located on South Fork of the New River, a National Scenic and Wild River and an American Heritage River. Zaloo’s Canoes Kayaks and Tubes is the oldest and friendliest outfitter in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our ideal riverside location is 4 miles from Jefferson, NC in Historic Ashe County. We are on the very best stretch of the New River in North Carolina. 31 miles of river below us is designated as New River State Park, and a National Scenic and Wild River with 4 access areas with campgrounds that make for great 2 to 5 day canoe and kayak camping trips. We are open 7 days a week for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing from April through mid October. Reservations are highly recommended especially for weekends.

The New River is also recognized as prime for sport fishing. The New River is a favorite of small mouth bass fishermen. Trout fishing is excellent in the smaller, faster tributaries, most of which are designated general trout waters and are stocked regularly with rainbow and brown trout. Anglers need a state fishing license in order to fish the designated trout streams . A license can be obtained on line here.

Inside the beautiful Ashe Park there are three shelters equipped with picnic tables and a grill to accommodate your needs. After entering the park and passing the All Star ball field on your right you will find the Mount Jefferson Shelter at the top of the hill, also on your right. As you continue on in the park, passing the upper parking lot and the maintenance building you will find the Russ Blevins Shelter at the bottom of the hill. The final and largest of the three, the Lakeview Shelter, is located directly behind Phoenix lake, which is equipped with two fishing piers and is stocked several times a year. You should contact the park about rates and availability for the shelters.

GPS: 36.387300, -81.027300

Stone Mountain is not immediately visible upon entering the park that bears its name, but this magnificent 600-foot granite dome is well worth the wait. Sunlight and shadows dance across a broad tapestry of stone. White-tailed deer emerge from the security of the forest to graze on meadow grasses at the mountain’s base. The scenery is only one attraction of the park.

Test your fly-fishing techniques in more than 20 miles of designated trout waters. Or, with more than 16 miles of trails, take a hike in the park. Designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1975, Stone Mountain is bounded on the north by the Blue Ridge Parkway and on the west by the Thurmond Chatham Game Lands. More than 14,100 acres of mountain beauty offer opportunities for outdoor activities of all kinds.

Nation’s Inn is located about an hour from Stone Mountain State Park through the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway.

The New River was named a National Wild and Scenic River in 1976 and it wildly winds through some of the best North Carolina mountain scenery. New River State Park is base camp for exploration of this river at two principal spots—Wagoner Road Access and US 221 Access. Both offer walk-in camping a few hundred feet from parking areas and both offer paddling access. Primitive, canoe-in camping is available at downstream access areas. Brief trips or multi-day excursions can be arranged with private outfitters or careful planning if visitors bring kayaks or canoes. It’s easy to combine paddling, camping, fishing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. A visitor center with exhibit hall complements interpretive programs on the river’s history and ecology, and a community building can be rented for family or group gatherings.

Mount Jefferson rises abruptly to more than 1,600 feet above the surrounding landscape, serving as a landmark for area motorists. Acquaint yourself with this mighty peak by viewing it first from the Mount Jefferson Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Rising as a long, forested prominence, its dark color is conspicuous among neighboring peaks on the Ashe plateau.

Though the mountain is magnificent from a distance, Mount Jefferson is best appreciated up close. On a clear day, you can see for miles from its peak. A great part of Ashe County spreads out below; fields, farms, forests and mountains mingle in kaleidoscopic patterns. On the horizon, the Blue Ridge Mountains form a striking backdrop.

Yet what looms in the distance is no more spectacular than what is right before your eyes, for the forests of Mount Jefferson are a botanical paradise. The interesting and unusual plant life of the park rendered it worthy of designation as a national natural landmark.

At this time, visitors can hike to the summit by following a newly constructed trail 1.9 miles to the summit.

We are located about 35 min from the park.

All state parks remain open and are unaffected by the partial federal government shutdown. All NC state parks are open with normal hours of operation.
