Elk Knob State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. ​

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.

Birds

Come learn about some of the local birds and make a pinecone feeder with peanutbutter and seeds to help birds make it the last stretch until spring. Meet in the park office.

Natural Pigments Workshop

Explore the nature of natural pigments. Discover the art of paint making, create your own paint from objects in nature, and alter pigments to create more colors with various substances. Event will be moved indoors in case of inclement weather. Meet at the outdoor amphitheater just off the trailhead parking lot.

April 6: Pig Pickin’ BBQ & Bluegrass Festival Featuring Blue Country Band. BBQ by James Killian, world champion BBQ Pitmaster & Master Judge. BBQ starts at 4pm to 6pm (or until sold out.)

Climate Tower Hike

Rediscover your park today and hike with a ranger to the mountain summit 4683 feet above sea level. At the summit, we will examine the NC Climate Office data collection tower. This tower has a great story to tell. See for yourself the science of weather, and climate on the top of Mt. Jefferson.

Meet the park ranger for a one-mile hike to Luther Rock amphibolite outcrop area. Come and explore some of the park’s most amazing views as you make your way along the mountain ridge.

Amazing Views

The distance between the mountain top and town below is about 500 meters or (1600ft). Either way it’s an amazing view on this mountain. Meet the ranger for driving tour of each of the three parking lot overlooks. We will discuss park and local history as we enjoy the “vast ocean of mountains”

Science Festival Stars and Stories

Meet at Sunset Overlook for a relaxing evening of night sky science and stories. Our evening will begin as the sun sets over Three Top and the mountains in our western horizon. This program will include hands-on activities, glow sticks, and an introduction to basic astronomy. Satellite viewing and a review of space science achievements will be a part of our starry evening. Join us for an hour of interesting fun space science and stories at Mt. Jefferson’s scenic overlooks.

Spring Nature Hike

Meet the ranger for a Spring hike along a short easy section of the park’s newest trail. As we hike we will watch for signs of spring and then turn-around at an amphibolite/quarts rock outcrop. This will be a 1/2 mile hike total distance. Bring a jacket and closed-toe shoes.
