Elk Knob State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. ​

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.

Natural Pigments Workshop

Explore the nature of natural pigments. Discover the art of paint making, create your own paint from objects in nature, and alter pigments to create more colors with various substances. Event will be moved indoors in case of inclement weather. Meet at the outdoor amphitheater just off the trailhead parking lot.

Skins & Skulls

Drop in and check out the skins and skulls of animals that are found in this area. A ranger will be on hand to answer questions from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Wildflower Identification

This ID class will focus on the basics of wildflower ID with a short venture into advanced techniques. A brief powerpoint will be followed by a easy meander down the Beech Tree Trail where ID skills will be put into practice.
