New River State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. ​

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.

Wildflower Hike

Join a ranger for a 1 mile hike along the New River in search of spring wildflowers.

Wear good walking shoes and bring a bottle of water. Feel free to bring your camera as well, to capture the beauty, so you can leave it for others to enjoy.

Night Hike

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to hike in the woods at night? Then meet a Ranger at the 221 Access Visitor Center to go on a Night Hike! Please be prepared for approximate 1 mile hike at night. Bring a flashlight or headlamp and wear sturdy hiking shoes.

Fishing Tips and Tricks

Be prepared for this fishing season. Meet a Ranger in the lower parking area for an informal question and answer about fishing the local area while learning some tips. Also look at equipment needed and lures that work in the river.

Junior Ranger Camp

Explore, learn and help out your state parks! Activities are geared for children ages 6-12 and include environmental education, interpretation of the area’s natural resources, and responsible recreation. Junior Rangers help park rangers take care of the park’s natural resources, follow park rules to stay safe and teach their friends and family what they learn about the park and natural world.

Please bring water and be prepared to get wet.
