Blue Ridge Relay (September 6-7, 2019)

Blue Ridge Relay

The Blue Ridge Relay (BRR), which is one of the longest running relay races in the United States, takes place in the picturesque Blue Ridge and Black Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. BRR consists of maximum 12 person (4 person minimum) teams that rotate through 36 transition areas as they cover the approximate 208 mile distance of the race. Each relay team member runs 3 legs of varying lengths and difficulty and will cover an average total distance of ~16.6 miles. The runners rotate in a set order once the race begins and will be obligated to follow this rotation until the final runner finishes in Asheville, North Carolina!

BRR starts in Grayson Highlands State Park, VA at an elevation of 4920′, near the base of Mount Rogers (5729′), the highest peak in Virginia. The course primarily follows scenic, country roads as it winds its way through North Carolina’s High Country to the finish in Asheville. The course features some of the region’s most spectacular scenery including the balds of Grayson Highlands State Park, the New River, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Grandfather Mountain (5964′) and the Toe and Cane Rivers.

The Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club invites all of you to come join them, Saturday, October 5, as they bring the 42nd Annual Brushy Mountain Apple Festival once again to downtown North Wilkesboro, NC from 8 AM – 5 PM. This is a one day, free admission Arts and Crafts Festival featuring over 325 crafters, 75 food vendors, Appalachian exhibitors, 4 stages of music and dancing, activities for the young and young at heart and much more. Please note that if you are interested in participating in the potluck, you should bring a dish of food to share and plan to be at the park by noon.

Adventure Night Hike

Meet the park ranger for a one-mile round-trip night hike into the darkness along Mt. Jefferson’s famous ridgeline. We `will seek out amazing views, observe stars, and the shimmering lights from town 1600 feet below us. Bring a small flashlight and wear sturdy shoes. Parts of this hike are considered strenuous, Appalachian night hikes are challenging. Children over 7 are welcome but must be closely supervised. 922
