A standard MBN Pro-level and Patio Porker contest with Whole Hog, Pulled Pork and Pork Rib categories hosted by Twin County Chamber of Commerce.

Smoke on The Mountain Galax, VA. promises all that, plus live music, crafters, vendors, children’s activities and other attractions on several blocks of historic downtown Galax.

Galax is known for pleasing the ear as the world’s Capitol of Bluegrass and Old-time Music, and its natural beauty is a feast for the eyes. Each summer, the city adds the smells and tastes of barbecue to its symphony for the senses.

Smoke on the Mountain features vendors selling BBQ and lots of other foods, along with a chance to try the competition-quality entries for free! Stick around after the judging ends on Saturday and visit the team booths to get free samples.

33rd Annual Christmas in July Festival (July 5-6, 2019)

Come spend a weekend in Downtown West Jefferson for the annual Christmas in July Festival! There will be a variety of live music on the main stage, numerous food vendors serving delicious festival food, over 100 handmade arts & craft vendors, several local nonprofit organizations, children’s activities, farmers market, roving street performers, a community stage showcasing local talent including dance group, musicians & more!

During this day, the West Jefferson Park located behind the festival will be home to the famous War re-enactors and you can visit their camp, watch battles & meet the group. Also, be sure to stop and vote for the People’s Choice Favorite Christmas Tree & see Santa!

An Appalachian Summer Festival (June 29th thru August 3rd 2019)

Presented by Appalachian State University’s Office of Arts & Cultural Programs, this annual celebration of the performing and visual arts is held every July in venues across the university campus, and features an eclectic, diverse mix of music, dance, theatre, visual arts and film programming. An Appalachian Summer Festival began in 1984 as a chamber music series, and retains strong roots in classical music, combined with a variety of other programming geared to almost every artistic taste and preference. Celebrating its 35th season in 2019, the festival has risen in stature to become one of the nation’s most highly respected summer festivals, acclaimed for the breadth and quality of its artistic programming.
In recent years, the festival has been selected as one of the “Top 20 Events in the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society. For many years, The New York Times has included An Appalachian Summer Festival in its “Summer Stages” issue, which profiles the nation’s most prominent and interesting summer arts festivals.

The Ashe County Little Theatre will present the Gypsy June 20-24. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday at 7:30 and Sunday matinee at 2:00. Tickets are $18 adults and $5 students. Tickets go on sale May 20.

The summer musical June 20-24 will be the Broadway musical “Gypsy”. The musical features music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and is loosely based on the memoirs of famous striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee. The story focuses on the relationship between Rose the mother of Louise who became Gypsy Rose Lee and her sister, Baby June who went on to be an actress. The show has appeared on Broadway no less than 5 times and featured many famous actresses, Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daley, Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters, Bette Midler and more!

The musical features songs that have since become show standards, “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, “Some People”, “Let Me Entertain You” and of course “Rose’s Turn” are all highlights of any production. The ACLT production will be directed by Joe Clark, with musical director Anthony Benson, and produced by Michael Malloy.

Summer Solstice Night Hike

Meet the park ranger for a 1.1-mile round-trip night hike along the ridgeline out to Luther Rock during the Summer Solstice. We will seek out amazing views, observe stars, as well as the shimmering lights from town 1,600 feet below. Bring a small flashlight and wear sturdy, closed toe shoes. Parts of this hike are considered strenuous, as Appalachian night hikes can be challenging. Children over the age of seven are welcome, but must be closely supervised. New River State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. ​

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.

Guided Canoe Trip

Canoe the New River with a park ranger and learn the history of the river, and basic canoe instruction while you enjoy a leisurely trip down the river. Please wear clothing and shoes suitable for the water and be aware that the water temperature is cooler than the air. We will meet at New River State Park’s Hwy 221 Access Visitor Center. Don’t forget to log your canoe trip, if you are working towards you 100 miles in the 100 -mile challenge. For more information about the 100 -mile challenge please go to www.nc100mile.org

Junior Ranger Camp

Explore, learn and help out your state parks! Activities are geared for children ages 6-12 and include environmental education, interpretation of the area’s natural resources, and responsible recreation. Junior Rangers help park rangers take care of the park’s natural resources, follow park rules to stay safe and teach their friends and family what they learn about the park and natural world.

Please bring water and be prepared to get wet.
